Defending Champions Exit Early in Paris

Title defenses are never easy, and Team Spirit found that out the hard way on July 16 in Paris. The reigning Dota 2 Esports World Cup champions were swept 2-0 by Team Yandex in the quarterfinals, ending their bid for back-to-back trophies at the $2 million tournament. It was a rough send-off for a squad that had worked its way back through the Survival Stage just a day earlier, grinding past Team Liquid 2-1 on July 15 to earn a playoff spot.

Also on July 16, PVISION took care of business against Rune Eaters, winning 2-0 to advance. Two more quarterfinal matches are scheduled for today, July 17, according to reporting by Dot Esports. Team Falcons, last year’s runners-up, face Vici Gaming at 6am CT, followed by Nigma Galaxy versus BB Team at 9:30am CT.

A Tournament Shaped by Drama Before the Playoffs

The bracket arriving at this stage was not without incident. PlayTime were removed from the Dota 2 EWC entirely after ESIC issued provisional suspensions to the team’s midlaner DarkMago and coach Vintage. The suspensions triggered a forfeit in the Survival Stage, handing Vici Gaming a walkover win. It was a significant disruption to the competition and a reminder that integrity investigations do not pause for live tournaments.

Beyond that situation, the Survival Stage on July 14 and 15 produced its share of clean storylines. LGD Gaming swept MOUZ in Round 1, while Team Liquid took down Xtreme Gaming 2-1. But both LGD and Liquid were eventually sent home in Round 2, with LGD falling to BB Team and Liquid losing to the same Spirit squad that would then be bounced by Yandex the next day. Rune Eaters, meanwhile, earned their playoff spot by beating Aurora Gaming 2-0.

From the earlier group stage, teams like 1w Team, which picked up the former Tundra Esports roster, and OG added some familiar faces to the field, though neither made it deep enough to factor into the final four.

What Remains at Stake

The Dota 2 EWC 2026 runs through July 19, with semifinals set for July 18 and both the third-place match and the grand final slated for the final day. The prize pool sits at $2 million, and with Team Spirit out, there is no clear favorite carrying tournament pedigree into the final stretch.

Team Yandex, fresh off their upset of the defending champions, will be one of the four semifinalists. PVISION joins them after their clean quarterfinal run. The remaining two spots will be decided today when Falcons and Vici Gaming and then Nigma Galaxy and BB Team sort things out.

For Falcons specifically, the motivation is obvious. They finished as runners-up at last year’s EWC and have been among the top seeds at this edition based on the ESL Pro Tour Leaderboard. Getting to a grand final and finally clearing that last hurdle would be the narrative the team has been building toward. Vici Gaming, who advanced through the Survival Stage bracket with some composure after the PlayTime walkover, will have something to say about that.

The semifinals on July 18 tip off at 6am CT and 9:30am CT, with the grand final following the next morning at 8:30am CT.
