NFL Suspends Cardinals Exec Ryan Gold for Draft Leaks and Betting

A 13-Year Career Derailed

The NFL suspended Arizona Cardinals personnel executive Ryan Gold indefinitely on Friday for violating the league’s gambling policy, the league announced. According to the Associated Press, the NFL’s investigation found that Gold provided confidential, non-public information about the Cardinals’ 2026 draft selections to outside parties before those picks were made public. He also placed parlay bets on NFL and college games.

Gold is in his 13th season with the Cardinals. He was promoted to director of college scouting in June 2025, after spending the previous three years as assistant director of college scouting and four years before that as a college scouting coordinator. That kind of institutional knowledge, and that level of access to pre-draft intelligence, is exactly what the NFL’s gambling rules are designed to contain.

The league did not identify who received the inside information from Gold.

What the NFL Said

“The Gambling Policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, strictly prohibits anyone in the NFL from participating in or facilitating any form of sports gambling, and from providing third parties non-public information,” the NFL said in a statement. The league added that while there is no reason to believe the integrity of any game was affected, it “takes any violation of the Gambling Policy with the utmost seriousness.”

The Cardinals, for their part, kept their statement brief and pointed forward. “The NFL’s policies and expectations for all employees are clear, comprehensive, and consistently communicated,” the team said. “We fully support the league’s decision in this matter, which involves a single employee. Our focus remains on preparing for the start of training camp next week and the 2026 season.”

The NFL confirmed that the Cardinals fully cooperated with the investigation and that no other member of the organization, no coach, and no player was found to be aware of or involved in the activity. The review included interviews with relevant individuals and an examination of electronic records.

The Line Between Players and Personnel

The incident highlights an important and sometimes misunderstood distinction within the NFL’s gambling framework. Players, but not club or league staff, are allowed to legally bet on other sports, provided they are off club property and not traveling with the team. Players can also participate in traditional fantasy football leagues, as long as prize money does not exceed $250, and they may gamble at casinos on personal time.

Club personnel like Gold face a stricter standard. For them, any form of sports gambling is off the table entirely, full stop. The league has invested heavily in making sure that is understood. According to the NFL, its gambling education program has reached more than 20,000 people associated with the league.

That scope makes Gold’s case harder to explain away as ignorance. Using a senior scouting role to feed draft intelligence to someone placing bets is precisely the scenario those programs are built to prevent.

A Rare but Recurring Problem

Player suspensions for gambling violations have happened at least 15 times since 1963, as reported by the Associated Press. The most recent was Isaiah Rodgers of the Indianapolis Colts, suspended indefinitely in June 2023. Suspensions of club personnel are less common, but the stakes surrounding draft and roster information have grown considerably as legalized sports betting has expanded across the United States.

Gold has the right to appeal the suspension. He could not be reached for comment, according to the Associated Press.

The Cardinals open training camp next week. Gold’s future with the organization, and with the league, now sits in a very different kind of draft room: an appeals process.
