Apex Legends dev hid a handwritten note from his late mom in E-District

A note taped to a fridge in a map nobody had to search

Tyler Owens has spent five years as a build engineer on Apex Legends, the kind of role that keeps the whole machine running without ever putting a name in the credits that players actually notice. When his mom died, he did something quietly remarkable. He gave her a permanent home inside the game he helps build, in a spot most players will loot in under three seconds and never return to.

As reported by Dexerto, the memorial sits inside E-District, the cyberpunk-styled map that came to Apex Legends last year. Specifically, it lives within the Heights point of interest. To find it, you climb to the top floor of the tallest building in that cluster. Not the roof. The floor just below it, where an unremarkable apartment door opens onto an unremarkable room.

Taped to the fridge is a handwritten note. It reads in full: “Can’t wait to go on our next adventure together. Let’s meet at the beach where the dragonflies are. Love you always, Mom. P.S. I am OK with this.”

That postscript earns its weight. Beside the note hangs a painting of Owens’ dog, rendered from an old photo of the animal soaked and grinning after what appears to be a swim. The P.S. feels like a nod to the painting, to the fact that she knew he would find a way to bring her here, dog and all.

The way Owens shared it made it land differently

Owens revealed the tribute himself, in a multi-slide clip that walked through the apartment room by room rather than leading with a dramatic single image. The caption was just “Surprise dog too!”. In the version that circulated, he reaches the apartment mid-match, a Mixtape round timer counting down in the corner the whole way up. Nothing about that door sets it apart from any other unit in the building. That’s the point.

There is a specific kind of tenderness in how small this is. No loading screen callout, no in-game notification, no PR announcement. A kitchen fridge, a painted dog, a short letter from someone who apparently wanted her kid to know she was at peace with wherever things were going. Tucked into a map that thousands of players drop into every day.

Apex Legends has done this before, but not quite like this

According to Dexerto, the game has folded real grief into its geography previously. A dog shrine hidden in Kings Canyon in 2019 is probably the most well-known example. But a handwritten note on a fridge, signed “Love you always, Mom,” reads differently than a shrine. It’s domestic. It’s the kind of object you walk past without reading if you’re not paying attention, the same way you might at someone else’s house.

E-District keeps accumulating layers. Dexerto notes that the map recently got a Cyberpunk collab that turned parts of it into Night City, and Season 29 brought a new Legend named Axle plus significant mechanical changes including Deathbox Respawns. The map was already dense with things to find. Now it has this too.

Owens has been part of that world for five years without much public visibility. It turns out he left something in it that will outlast any season pass or limited-time event. Somewhere in the Heights, above a loot route players run on autopilot, there is an apartment with a dog painting and a letter from a mother who wanted to meet at the beach where the dragonflies are. Most players will never see it. Some will, and they will probably stop moving for a moment.
