GTA 5 and mascot costumes inspired viral hamster game Sweet Hamster Days
The creators of the bizarre indie hit Sweet Hamster Days have opened up about their unlikely influences, from a mascot costume side job to Rockstar's open-world classic.
A very strange game with even stranger roots
Sweet Hamster Days does not have an obvious elevator pitch. You play as a pet hamster. Your owners take care of you. That is essentially it. And yet the game has become one of the more talked-about indie releases of the year, racking up viral clips and pulling in audiences well outside the niche it might have originally targeted. It even caught the attention of former Japanese politician Seiko Hashimoto, who joked, as reported by Dexerto, that Japan’s declining birth rate is “going to decrease even further” because of it. High praise, in its own way.
Now the developers have given some insight into how this particular oddity came together, and the inspirations are about as unexpected as the game itself.
Mascot costumes, care games, and one open-world crime saga
Speaking to Automaton and reported by Dexerto, designer Oda described Sweet Hamster Days as a “being-taken-care-of adventure game,” framing the whole project around the experience of inhabiting a radically different perspective. For Oda, the touchstones were existing care-focused titles. “My influences were Knowledge, or Know Lady, and Five Hearts Under One Roof,” Oda said.
But it was project overseer Katayama who brought the more surprising context. Before the game existed, Katayama had a part-time job wearing mascot costumes, and that experience quietly planted the seed for everything that followed.
“Years ago, I worked a part-time job wearing mascot costumes,” Katayama explained. “I realized that whenever I wore a costume, children and elderly people who would normally never approach me suddenly became very friendly. That made me wonder, ‘If I took on a form different from my usual self, wouldn’t I experience that same kind of joy and fun?’ That’s where the idea came from.”
There is something genuinely touching about that origin. The game is not really about being a hamster so much as it is about what happens when you shed your usual shape and let people treat you differently. The costume makes you approachable. The hamster body makes you small and dependent and cared for. It is a specific kind of emotional experiment dressed up in very fluffy packaging.
And then there is GTA 5. According to the Dexerto report, Katayama pointed to Rockstar’s open-world crime epic as one of the biggest inspirations for the project. The connection is not immediately obvious. Sweet Hamster Days and Grand Theft Auto V occupy pretty much opposite ends of the tonal spectrum. But the underlying idea of occupying a life that is not your own, of moving through a world with its own logic and rules from the inside, is something both games share in their own wildly different registers.
Why this matters beyond the memes
Sweet Hamster Days is published by Kodansha, the major Japanese publishing house, which gives it a bit more institutional weight than your average hobbyist curiosity. And the viral attention it has gathered suggests the game hit something real, even if it is hard to articulate exactly what.
The mascot costume story is the most resonant piece of context here. Games about transformation and perspective are not new, but most of them put you in the body of something powerful or dangerous. A hamster is neither. It is small, it relies entirely on the goodwill of the people around it, and its whole existence is defined by being looked after. That is a genuinely unusual emotional space for a game to occupy, and the fact that it came from someone’s memory of children running up to hug a costume character makes it feel grounded in something human rather than just mechanically weird.
The GTA 5 connection is more of a conversation starter than a design blueprint. But it is a reminder that inspiration moves in strange directions, and that a game about roaming Los Santos apparently helped someone figure out how to make a game about living in a hamster cage.
