PSN goes down as Marvel Tokon open beta launches on PC and PS5
Players attempting to jump into the Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls open beta were met with error screens hours after the beta went live on July 24. Neither PlayStation nor the game's team had officially acknowledged the outage at the time of writing.
Bad timing for a fighting game launch
If you tried to log into PlayStation Network on July 24 and found yourself staring at an error screen, you are not alone. According to Video Games Chronicle, PSN went down just hours after the open beta for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls went live on PC and PS5. The timing, to put it gently, is rough.
Players on PS5 are running into error code WS-116486-6. PlayStation’s own support site describes that code as indicating “there was an issue connecting to the server,” which is about as helpful as it sounds. The PlayStation support site itself was loading intermittently at the time VGC published its report. Downdetector, the outage-tracking site, shows users in the UK began reporting problems around 12 PM BST.
For PC players, the situation is particularly frustrating because Marvel Tokon requires a PSN sign-in even on that platform. So this is not just a console problem.
The beta was already a milestone
The Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls open beta marks the first time the public has been able to try the game on PC. That is a reasonably big deal for a fighting game with this much profile behind it. The roster was recently completed with the addition of Nolan North’s Deadpool, and its single-player mode was written by Kieron Gillen, the writer behind Uncanny X-Men. There is real anticipation built up around this one.
Which makes the wall of error screens feel that much more deflating. A post on X from the Marvel Tokon account asking players for feedback on the game was, as VGC reports, getting swamped with replies from people who simply could not get in. One user, @DaRyo1989, posted a screenshot of the error with the caption “Can’t even play the damn game.”
At the time of writing, neither PlayStation Support nor the Marvel Tokon social channels had officially acknowledged the problem.
Is the beta to blame?
VGC was careful to note that it remains unclear whether the Marvel Tokon open beta is actually contributing to PSN’s downtime. Network outages have many causes, and correlation between a big beta launch and a service hiccup is not the same as causation. That said, a major open beta drawing a fresh wave of players onto a platform is exactly the kind of load spike that can stress infrastructure.
The slightly encouraging news is that some players have reported getting through after multiple reattempts, and Downdetector’s numbers were trending downward as the story was being written. So the situation appeared to be improving, even if slowly.
For players who have been waiting to see what Arc System Works has built with the Marvel license, the wait is lasting a little longer than expected today. The beta is out there. The servers, less so.
What error code are PS5 users seeing during the PSN outage?
According to Video Games Chronicle, PS5 users are seeing error code WS-116486-6, which PlayStation's own support site describes as indicating an issue connecting to the server.
Is the Marvel Tokon open beta causing the PSN outage?
It is unclear, as VGC notes. The timing is coincidental, but neither PlayStation Support nor the Marvel Tokon team had officially addressed any connection between the beta and the downtime at the time of the report.
Can players get into Marvel Tokon at all during the outage?
Some players have reportedly managed to sign in and access the game after several reattempts, and Downdetector showed the rate of reports was slowly decreasing, per VGC.
