For anyone who worried that God of War Laufey might quietly shuffle Kratos off into retirement, Santa Monica Studio has some reassuring news. Cory Barlog, the studio’s Head of Creative, confirmed during a dedicated Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con on July 24 that a new Kratos-led God of War is coming after the Faye-focused entry, and that it will connect directly to her story. No title, trailer, gameplay footage, platforms, or release window were shared, but the confirmation alone carries real weight.

The announcement, as reported by IGN and Dexerto, goes meaningfully further than what Barlog had said when Laufey was first revealed in June. At that time he offered broad reassurance that Kratos would always be part of the franchise’s future. “There’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history,” he said then. Game Director Ariel Lawrence put it even more plainly: “We can’t not tell stories about the big guy.”

Now there is something more concrete. Barlog described Laufey as “a continuation of what came before” that will help prepare and expand where the series goes next. That framing positions the Faye-centered game not as a side trip away from Kratos but as a narrative bridge directly into his next chapter.

What Laufey Is Actually Setting Up

God of War Laufey begins after Faye’s funeral, the same death that opened 2018’s God of War and sent Kratos and his son Atreus on their journey across the Norse realms. According to the source material, Faye unexpectedly awakens in a place called the Everywhen. It is a premise that lets Santa Monica explore a character fans have been curious about since she was established as a foundational figure in the modern trilogy, all while laying groundwork for Kratos’ return.

The structure here is interesting. Rather than spinning Laufey off as purely its own self-contained thing, Barlog is framing it as load-bearing storytelling. Faye’s game matters not just on its own terms but because of what it is building toward. That kind of intentional continuity has been a strength of the Norse saga since 2018, where every entry leaned hard into consequences and setup.

Whether the next Kratos game moves the action to a new mythology or remains in the Norse world is entirely unknown at this point. The studio offered nothing beyond the existence of the project and its narrative connection to Laufey.

A Release Date Arrives with the Announcement

The SDCC panel also produced one concrete date. Santa Monica Studio announced that God of War Laufey will release on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The studio posted the date to social media on July 25, keeping the announcement clean and simple.

February is an interesting window. It has become a quietly competitive month for big releases, and placing Laufey there suggests Sony has confidence in the title standing on its own rather than needing a holiday runway. February 2027 also gives the studio roughly seven months from now, which is not a wide gap but presumably reflects a project that is well into its final stretch.

For fans of the series, the SDCC news amounts to a promise on two fronts at once: Faye’s story gets its moment, and Kratos will be waiting on the other side of it. Santa Monica is threading the needle between honoring a new protagonist and reassuring the audience that the series’ anchor is not going anywhere. Whether those two threads pull the franchise forward in a satisfying direction will depend on what Laufey actually delivers when it ships next February.
