Two Decades Later, Master Chief Still Has It

Twenty-five years is a genuinely absurd amount of time in video games. Franchises rise and collapse, genres reinvent themselves, controllers sprout extra buttons. And yet, according to Dexerto reviewer Joe Pring, Halo: Campaign Evolved arrives in 2026 feeling less like a museum piece and more like something that could have shipped last Tuesday. That is not nothing.

Published July 23, Pring’s review describes Halo Studios’ rebuilt take on Bungie’s landmark first-person shooter as “the definitive way to play a classic,” crediting a “rejuvenating visual touch-up and a few bells and whistles” with making the original campaign feel freshly relevant without overhauling what made it work in the first place. The rebuild, as Pring tells it, is almost aggressively faithful, which he acknowledges cuts both ways.

Faithful to a Fault, and That’s Fine

The review’s most interesting tension lives right up front. Pring notes that the game “feels almost too faithful at times,” which naturally raises the question of whether returning to Halo’s ringworld was ever strictly necessary. His answer, though, is essentially: it doesn’t matter, because Halo never needed reinvention.

What Campaign Evolved does instead, according to Dexerto, is hand longtime fans a polished reason to revisit something they already love and hand newcomers what Pring calls “the best reason yet to answer the call of the Chief.” That framing treats the remake less as a creative statement and more as a delivery mechanism, which sounds like faint praise until you consider just how well the original campaign has aged on its own terms.

For anyone who missed the original run, the setup is as follows. Master Chief, a Spartan super soldier, escapes the doomed planet of Reach alongside the crew of the Pillar of Autumn and stumbles upon a mysterious ring-shaped world. The Covenant, a hostile alien collective, boards the ship. Chief sets foot on the installation with his AI companion Cortana. What starts as a tale of galactic warfare eventually becomes something darker. The review describes it as one of the best FPS campaigns ever made, and that reputation has not diminished.

A Smart Approach to a Revered Shooter

Dexerto’s review praises Halo Studios for reading the room. Rather than going “scorched-earth” and completely reimagining the source material, the studio understood that the original’s foundations were sound enough to build on rather than tear down. The result, in Pring’s assessment, is a package that serves the material rather than competing with it.

The release also comes with a few notable context points. As previously reported by Dexerto, Campaign Evolved includes new missions alongside the rebuilt original content, and Halo Studios has stated a desire to bring players back together by releasing the game on PlayStation, a meaningful shift for a franchise that spent most of its life as a Microsoft platform exclusive. There is also, apparently, an instruction manual locked behind special editions, which feels like a very 2001 move dressed up for 2026.

What the Score Means for the Franchise

Halo has had a complicated decade. The series that defined a console generation and essentially taught a generation of players how to feel about sci-fi shooters has spent years searching for its footing. Campaign Evolved, at least by Dexerto’s account, represents Halo Studios making peace with its legacy rather than running from it.

That is a meaningful thing to get right. The question of whether a remake was “necessary” almost always misses the point. What matters is whether it works, and according to Pring, this one does. Master Chief’s first adventure remains, apparently, exactly as good as you remember, only sharper.
