LEGO's D&D Red Dragon's Tale Sells Out Before July 31 Retirement
The massive 3,745-piece Dungeons and Dragons set has gone dry at Amazon, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and LEGO's own site with nearly two weeks left before it officially retires.
Gone Before It’s Gone
If you had July 31 circled on your calendar as the last day to grab the LEGO Dungeons and Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale set, the market already moved without you. As reported by IGN, the set has sold out at every major US retailer carrying LEGO products, including Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Best Buy. Even LEGO’s own website shows the dreaded “sold out” notice, and the official retirement date is still nearly two weeks away.
The set carries a sticker price of $359.99 and is listed as set number 21348. At 3,745 pieces, it is not a casual afternoon project.
What Made This One Special
The Red Dragon’s Tale is built around Cinderhowl, the red dragon from Wizards of the Coast’s iconic tabletop RPG. The castle structure stands over 19 inches tall, runs more than a foot wide, and a foot deep. It comes with six minifigures: an innkeeper, a Dragonborn, and four adventurers representing classic D&D classes.
One detail that stands out from the standard fantasy LEGO fare is the inclusion of a downloadable digital D&D campaign designed to be played using the actual bricks as game pieces. That is a genuinely clever idea, turning a display piece into a functional tabletop accessory.
IGN’s Kevin Wong had the chance to build the set firsthand and described what he found. “Taken together, LEGO Dungeons and Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale more than impresses on its own,” Wong said. “There’s so many little nooks and crannies in this build, so many new things to see and explore at every turn. And the color scheme, with its bright blues and reds against the castle’s neutral grays, stands out and grabs your attention from across the room.”
The brick-built Beholder also drew attention as a notably creative use of LEGO’s parts library, according to IGN’s coverage.
What Happens After Retirement
When a LEGO set officially retires, production stops. That is the short version. The longer version is that popular sets often disappear from shelves before the retirement date, as this one has, while less sought-after sets sometimes linger at third-party retailers for a while after the cutoff.
For buyers still hoping to find one, the realistic path now runs through eBay or third-party Amazon sellers, where retired sets typically command a markup over original retail. Secondhand options can occasionally surface at a discount, though IGN notes that buying used carries the risk of missing pieces, which could mean tracking down individual bricks to complete the build.
Other Sets Heading Out the Door
The Red Dragon’s Tale is not the only set nearing the end of its run. According to IGN, several other LEGO sets are currently out of stock at the LEGO Store but still available through Amazon. Those include the Star Wars Acclamator-Class Assault Ship (set 75404, currently listed at $49.73), the Star Wars Home One Starcruiser (set 75405, at $54.99 after a 21 percent discount), the Mario Kart Toad’s Garage set (72035, at $31.99 after a 20 percent discount), and the One Piece Battle at Arlong Park set (75638, listed around $78.00), among others.
None of them are quite the same statement piece as the Red Dragon’s Tale, but if you missed that one, at least the retirement wave offers a few consolation prizes worth knowing about before those windows close too.
